If you are a business person who has a web site on the world wide web, then you need to get serious about link building.

What IS link building?

I can tell you right now, it’s not a place you find on the web where you join a link exchange program to get some links to your web site. I made that mistake already. You don’t have to.It’s not a web site on the Internet you find and hit “subject link” and think your rankings will get you on the first page of Google and thousands of populating will come flocking to your site because they can finally find you.

And it’s definitely not an automated link exchange program you found to get you automatic links while you sleep.

What about a free link exchange? Don’t do it if it’s a FFA (free for entirely) web site. Period. Just do not submit your web site link there, ever.

So what CAN you do to get started on some serious link building techniques that will get you listed on the first page of Google?

1 – Do your homework.

2 – Find out what keywords people are actually typing into the search engines, not which ones you “think” you want to rank for that people “might” be typing into a Google or Yahoo search engine box.

Optimizing Blogger Title Tags

By default Blogger templates come with a “smart” tag inserted that automatically places the Blog Title before every post title in the title tags on the actual post pages. This “smart” tag also displays only the Blogger Title for the main page of the blog – meaning your Blog title is shown on EVERY page.

So, for most of you involved in SEO, I’m preaching to the choir when I tell you that title tags are important and that they could very well be the most important piece of your blog. For those of you not familiar, here are a couple of things about title tags.

1-Title tags describe a page. They are a one line summary of what the page is about. The common understanding of the tag is to wrap the title of the site. Unfortunately for many people, the title of the site is completely UN-descriptive of the content of the blog. For example, my blog is called “Search Marketing Blog Online”. If I put this in the title tag, search engines really have no clue as to the content of each post on my site. It would be much better for SEO to place a keyword-rich description (e.g. “Optimizing Title Tags for Blogger”) in the title tag.

It’s the Title Used in SERPs! The content of your title tag is what will be displayed in search engine results.

So, yesterday, I made it my mission to find a way to fix/manipulat Blogger’s smart tag. In doing so, I found another problem – there are two versions of Blogger templates still being used. There is a Beta version and the Classic version and nowhere did I find both ‘fixes’ listed in one place.

So, here you go!

This is written for Blogger’s Beta version and so it only works in Beta.

Optimizing Blogger Title Tags – 1

At the top of the page of HTML you should find the following code:

All you have to do is replace this code with:

SEO General Keyword Strategy

Now that you have your list of best and most important keyword phrases, here is the general strategy of how to use them on your web pages. Exactly how to optimize your use of keywords on your web pages is the subject of the next section.

The general rule of thumb is that you optimize each page for ideally no more than two different keyword phrases.

Each page should include your Primary Keyword Phrase. Your home page should also contain your best Secondary Keyword Phrase. Each product, service, or content page should also contain the best specific variation to your Primary Keyword Phrase.

Because your home page is generally the one that gets the highest ranking, and is linked to most from other sites, you need to place special emphasis on the use of your Primary Keyword Phrase there. Your home page will then link to other pages on your site that contain (and are optimized for) your other, more specific, keyword phrases.

Using the example again for “house plans”, here would be the general keyword strategy:

Home page: optimize for “house plans” (primary phrase) and home plans (best secondary phrase).

Country House Plans page: optimize for “country house plans” phrase and any other variations, such as “French country house plans”. Note how these phrases already contain the Primary Keyword phrase within them. This is the ideal situation to achieve.

French Country House Plans page: optimize for “French country house plans” phrase.

Contact Us page: include the phrase “house plans” several times on the page. This page, along with the other “fluff” pages, are not really relevant for any specific keyword phrase. So use your Primary Keyword Phrase here.

About Us page: again, include “house plans” phrase several times on the page for the same reason as the Contact Us page.
